Sant’Illuminato is a charming farmhouse located in the upper Tiber Valley, in Città di Castello near the border between Tuscany and Umbria, within easy driving distance of scenic and historic centers like Perugia (55 km), Arezzo (50 Km), Sansepolcro (32 Km), Assisi (68 Km); Gubbio (42 Km) and Lake Trasimeno (42 Km).

Città di Castello is situated on a slight hill and it is the most important and populated centre of the Tiber Valley. The first huts were built on stilts on the lake islets Tiberino, now largely retired. It was most likely founded by the Umbrian that at the beginning of the first millennium AD settled in central Italy and called Tiferno. In the seventh century AD some had comercial trade with the people of the Etruscans who had penetrated to the right bank of the Tiber. Following the reform of Diocletian (285-305 AD), the territory was included in Tifernate Tuscia et Umbria province under direct Roman administration.

The city was completely destroyed by the Goths of Totila in the sixth century, but was rebuilt and fortified by the will of the Bishop Florido (current patron of the city). Testimony of his strength and power are the two magnificent palaces of the Podestà and Priori, designed by 'architect Angelo da Orvieto. Città di Castello, then came under the jurisdiction of the State of the Church until 1798, when the troops come into Cisalpino City. With the fall of Napoleon, in 1814, was restored papal power with brief periods of freedom in 1831 with the establishment of a provisional committee, and in 1849 with the accession to the Roman Republic. With arrival of General Fanti, head of the troops of Piedmont, on September 1860, was freed and attached to the United Italy.
